US: Kia recall the Spectra because fuel tank issues.

Kia is recalling 58,322 units from 2004-’07 Spectra, primarily in Midwestern and northeastern states, because corrosion from road salt could cause the fuel tank to fall off the vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

NHTSA said prolonged exposure to road salt could cause corrosion of the straps that hold the tank.

“As a result of the corrosion, one or both straps may separate, allowing the fuel tank to contact the ground and possibly disrupt the integrity of the tank,” the agency said. As a consequence, the agency said, “the fuel tank can fall from the vehicle and strike the ground, which could cause a fuel leak,” creating a fire hazard.

Kia dealers will replace the fuel-tank straps and attaching hardware with new zinc-coated parts. The recall is expected to begin in June. Owners can contact Kia at (800) 333-4542.
