Today we have more details of the Genesis G80 EV or “eG80”. After a meeting between Samsung Electronics vice-president Lee Jae-yong and senior vice-president Jung Eui-sun of Hyundai Motor Group, Samsung SDI will supply of autonomous driving technology that allow the eG80 to have autonomous level 3.

According to industry sources on the 20th, the G80 electric vehicle will be equipped with a battery pack with a capacity that can run up to 500 km per charge. The G80 electric vehicle is also equipped with Level 3 Autonomous Driving technology. G80 EV battery is finally supplied by SK Innovation despite the initial rumourmill saying will use Samsung batteries.

The level 3 autonomous driving technology applied to the G80 electric vehicle is under joint venture development by Hyundai Motor Company and Samsung Electronics. ‘Level 3’ autonomous driving is a partial autonomous driving step that requires the driver’s intervention when necessary to operate the vehicle under the specified conditions, such as operating limitations.

Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, and Volvo have made electric cars that can run over 400 km, but have not secured yet a commercially available technology with Level 3 autonomous driving technology. It is known that malfunction occurs while driving when Level 3 autonomous driving technology is mounted on the existing electric vehicle platform.

The G80 electric vehicle is equipped with a variety of intelligent driving aids, such as the same Highway Driving Assist II (HDA II) as the G80 internal combustion engine, Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning (SCC-ML), Pre active Safety Seat (PSS), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) and Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (BCA).

Hyundai Motor and Samsung SDI have been developing G80 vehicles that can implement Level 3 autonomous driving technology for two years ago (several times spotted in South Korea). On the same day, Hyundai Motors Vice Chairman Jeong Seon-sun and Samsung Vice Chairman Jae-yong Lee discussed the development direction of the next-generation business including the G80 electric vehicle.

Hyundai Motor Group has announced the release of 14 new electric vehicles to add to its line-up by 2025. The Genesis brand will launch the first electric vehicle in 2021, the eG80. In a recent Hyundai Motor Group’s first quarter conference call, along with the news of the launch of the G80 electric car, it also announced plans to start full-scale electrification of the entire Genesis lineup from 2024.

The test vehicle is completely covered by the camouflage. However, through the dish-type 19-inch wheel, quad-lamp, and crest grille, you can quickly recognize that this car is the Genesis G80. What is unusual is that the vehicle hood is opened and the quick charger is connected to the engine room. It seems likely that the positioning of the charging connector has not been finalized.

All of this technology equipment together with the Autonomous Level 3 will make the G80 EV a little bit expensive, according to the sources, with an starting price of over 100 million won ($81,597).
