Hyundai Motor Company will have an A-segment electric CUV by 2023. We already noticed that A-segment CUV electric vehicles are being developed through Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicle roadmap, but this is the first time that a specific release schedule has been confirmed.

Hyundai Motor recently signed a contract with US auto parts maker Borg Warner to supply an integrated electric system or “iDM” for the production of small (A-segment) electric vehicle, which are already under development to be on sale in mid-2023.

It looks like Hyundai Motor’s electrification project is being implemented as planned. Hyundai Motor Company previously announced its goal of selling a total of 12 new electric vehicle models by 2025 and selling 560,000 electric vehicles, or 10% of the total passenger car sales that year.

In particular, at a global investment briefing last month, it revealed for the first time a specific plan to launch a new A-segment CUV model around the end of 2022.

It has not been confirmed whether this model is an electrified model of an existing vehicle or a completely new dedicated electric vehicle. However, Hyundai Motor Company released a teaser image of the new compact model ‘AX1’ back in May. This model is known to be officially launched after the second half of this year, targeting emerging markets such as India, but it will be also available in South Korea and it is expected to have an EV variant.

“We have enjoyed nearly two decades of partnership with the Hyundai Motor Group and couldn’t be more excited about this next step – working on our first electrification project together,” said Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager, BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems. “I am especially enthusiastic about the fact that this is the first iDM product combining the portfolios of BorgWarner and legacy Delphi Technologies after the acquisition, reaping the benefits of the two organizations.”
