When Hyundai officially opened order books for the eighth-generation All-New Avante (CN8 / Elantra globally), online reactions were dominated by sticker shock. A price bump pushing the entry price above 23.9 million KRW ($22,350 USD), reaching up to 42 million KRW (~$31,300 USD) for loaded hybrid models—had critics predicting a tough road ahead for South Korea’s quintessential entry-level car.
The official September sales figures tell an entirely different story.
In its first full month of unrestricted deliveries, the new Avante surged straight to 3rd place overall in South Korea, delivering 6,945 units of the eighth-generation sedan (out of 7,305 total Avante sales). It finished just 12 units shy of the second-place Kia Sorento (6,957 units) and trailed only Hyundai’s flagship The New Grandeur (8,898 units).
September 2026 Domestic Sales Highlights
1st Place – Hyundai The New Grandeur (8,898 units): Rebounded over 50% month-over-month following the end of summer production strikes, reclaiming the domestic sales crown despite its own recent ($3,725 USD) price increase.
2nd Place – Kia Sorento (6,957 units): Retained its commanding position in the midsize SUV segment, holding onto second place overall.
3rd Place – Hyundai All-New Avante (6,945 units): Secured the podium spot in its first full month on sale, trailing the Sorento by just 12 units.
4th Place – Kia Sportage (5,497 units): Saw a 41% sales increase month-over-month as buyers gravitated toward it during the Tucson's generation changeover.
5th Place – Kia Seltos (5,042 units): Continued strong performance to round out the top five.

Room to Climb: Why These Numbers Could Get Even Stronger
Impressive as these delivery numbers are, they only tell part of the story. The 6,945 units registered in September consist almost entirely of pure gasoline variants, as customer deliveries for the eighth-generation Avante Hybrid have not yet rolled out in full force.
Given the massive consumer appetite for electrified powertrains in South Korea, hybrid trims historically represent a substantial share of total Avante volume. As factory output ramps up and hybrid deliveries begin hitting driveways in earnest through the fourth quarter, these sales figures could climb significantly higher—putting the Avante in prime position to contest the Grandeur for the undisputed No. 1 spot on the domestic sales charts.
Why Price Backlash Didn’t Stop the Sales
While commentators frequently argued that compact buyers would cross-shop discounted midsize alternatives like the Kia K8—where discounts of around 3 million KRW (~$2,235 USD) bring upper trims into a similar price bracket—or jump into crossovers, several market dynamics worked in the Avante's favor:
Zero Direct Domestic Rivals: The C-segment sedan market in Korea has effectively cleared out. Kia opted not to bring the K4 sedan to the domestic Korean market, leaving the discontinued K3 with no direct in-house successor. With legacy nameplates like the Chevrolet Cruze and Renault SM3 long gone, buyers wanting a compact three-box sedan have nowhere else to turn.
Compact Practicality Trumps Size: Not every buyer wants a longer car. In dense urban centers across Korea, tight residential parking bays, automated mechanical parking towers, and narrow alleys make compact dimensions an asset rather than a compromise. Combined with lower annual displacement-based road taxes and routine maintenance costs, an entry sedan remains a rational choice.
Packaged Standard Equipment: While base MSRP rose by roughly 3.3 to 3.8 million KRW (~$2,450 to $2,830 USD), Hyundai bundled previously optional safety and convenience features as standard equipment across the board, mitigating the real-world transaction price delta for buyers who would have optioned up anyway.
The Bigger Picture
The Avante’s initial reception provides a clear look at current consumer behavior in Korea. While vehicle prices continue to rise across every segment, strong nameplates in uncrowded niches retain immense drawing power.
The true test will come over the next quarter as the initial wave of pre-orders clears and hybrid allocations begin reaching driveways. But for its opening act, the eighth-generation Avante has proved that talk of its demise was vastly overstated.
