2027 Hyundai Santa Fe EREV Confirmed for US Production with Over 600 Miles of Range

Santa Fe EREV

During its 2026 CEO Investor Day, Hyundai Motor Company officially locked in the launch window and core specifications for its first extended-range electric vehicle: the 2027 Hyundai Santa Fe EREV. Slated to arrive in the first half of 2027, the Santa Fe EREV marks a strategic shift for the brand in North America, bridging the gap between conventional hybrids and pure battery electric vehicles.

Engineered in Korea, Built in Alabama

Hyundai confirmed that the Santa Fe EREV will be manufactured directly in the United States at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA). This localized production is an integral part of Hyundai's broader North American strategy, which aims to add 500,000 units of regional capacity and increase local parts sourcing to over 80% by 2030.

The vehicle has already been spotted during testing under the internal prototype designation "MX5a EREV"—with the "A" denoting its North American market specification. Prototypes spotted in real-world testing have revealed a dual-door layout: a traditional fuel door alongside a dedicated plug-in charging port.

Targeting Over 600 Miles of Total Range

Unlike standard parallel hybrids where the internal combustion engine directly drives the transmission, the Santa Fe EREV functions as a serial hybrid. The combustion engine acts exclusively as an onboard generator to recharge the high-voltage battery pack while driving:

  • Total Combined Range: Over 600 miles (approx. 965 km) on a single tank and charge.

  • Next-Gen In-House Battery Cells: Hyundai’s proprietary cell design delivers more than double the power output of previous high-nickel cells and reduces charging times by 40%.

  • Right-Sized Battery Pack: Utilizes less than half the battery capacity of an equivalent full battery electric vehicle, cutting vehicle weight and manufacturing cost while delivering instantaneous electric torque and quiet operation.

  • Interior & Cockpit Tech: Set to arrive alongside the refreshed 5th-generation Santa Fe styling, integrating Hyundai’s next-generation Pleos Connect connected-car platform and Gleo AI assistant.

Strategic Market Positioning

The Santa Fe EREV is engineered specifically for drivers in North America and global markets who want daily pure-electric commuting paired with unlimited long-distance towing and road-tripping capability without charging anxiety.
