Unveiled at the 2024 Jeddah International Motor Show, the KIA Tasman has not only captured attention but also achieved unprecedented success, with over 4,000 contracts in just 17 days following its domestic launch on February 13, 2024.

Breaking Records in Sales Performance

The Tasman’s launch has been nothing short of phenomenal, accounting for approximately 30% of the total pickup truck sales among major domestic automakers last year. On its first day alone, Kia secured 2,200 contracts, underscoring the market’s enthusiasm for this new model. According to a Kia representative, the contracts reflect genuine consumer interest since they were formalized post-disclosure of pricing and specifications—emphasizing Kia’s transparent approach.

A Vehicle Engineered to Impress

Designed and developed over four years, the Tasman exemplifies Kia’s dedication to innovation and quality. Highlights of the vehicle include:

  • Engine and Performance: Equipped with a 2.5L turbo gasoline engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Tasman delivers an impressive 281 horsepower (PS) and a torque of 43.0 kgf·m.
  • Fuel Efficiency: It offers a combined fuel efficiency of 8.6 km/L, making it a balanced choice for performance and economy.
  • Special Features: With a unique “Tow Mode,” the Tasman enhances stability during demanding drives, catering to the utility needs of diverse consumers.

Competitive Pricing and Market Potential

Starting at an attractive 37.5 million won, the Tasman is poised to rejuvenate a declining domestic pickup truck market. As reported by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA), overall pickup sales have plummeted from 42,619 units in 2019 to 13,475 units in 2024. Kia’s innovative entry is anticipated to reverse this trend, with market analysts predicting a notable expansion in pickup truck demand.

Competition and Market Trends

Currently, only KG Mobility (KGM) and GM Korea offer pickup trucks in the domestic market, with KGM’s Rexton Sports leading the segment. However, the Tasman’s debut is set to disrupt the status quo, signaling a competitive shake-up. Additionally, the market is veering towards electrification, as evidenced by KGM’s launch of the Musso EV, the nation’s first electric pickup truck.

The Tasman: A Game-Changer for Kia and the Market

Kia Corp.’s bold foray into the pickup truck segment with the Tasman has already made waves. Its remarkable sales performance, coupled with advanced engineering and competitive pricing, positions the Tasman as a transformative force in the domestic pickup truck market.
