A newly surfaced pre-production prototype of the upcoming Kia Sportage has been spotted thanks to our colleagues at ShortsCar, revealing key production elements and notable dimensional upgrades. From EV-inspired front styling to a physically measured stretch in wheelbase, here is everything uncovered from the latest prototype breakdown.
EV5-Inspired Exterior Styling & Lighting
The next-generation Sportage adopts distinct design language from Kia's dedicated electric SUV family:
EV5-Style Hood and Fenders: The front clamshell shut lines and sculpted fender contours echo the bold, squared-off proportions seen on the Kia EV5.
Vertical Headlamp Architecture: Intricate DRL light signatures wrap down into vertically stacked projection lenses, aligning with Kia's Opposites United design direction.
Integrated Sensor Suite: The painted grille houses a centrally placed surround-view camera, complemented by a lower radar assembly designed for next-gen ADAS driver assistance.
Expanded Footprint: A 2,790 mm Wheelbase
A key highlight from the prototype measurement is the extended wheelbase:
Previous Dimension: 2,755 mm
Next-Gen Measured Dimension: ~2,790 mm
Total Increase: An estimated 35 mm to 40 mm gain
Wheel Fitment: New 20-inch geometric alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport rubber replace the previous 19-inch maximum factory options
This dimensional growth delivers enhanced second-row legroom and expanded rear cargo capacity, pushing the compact crossover closer to midsize dimensions.
Profile & Rear End Design
Practical Hardware: Kia retains rugged, pull-type grab door handles rather than motorized flush handles for long-term reliability in varying climates.
Gloss Black Accents: A, B, and C-pillars, along with lower body cladding, feature high-gloss black surfacing.
Minimalist Rear Lighting: The rear lights adopt clean, vertical rectangular shapes, paired with bumper-mounted turn indicators and a sloping rear windshield.
New Pleos Screen : Kia plans to showcase its new interior layout for the first time in the Sportage, with a new steering wheel and the addition of the 17-inch Pleos Connect screen.
A Shift Towards Electrification
Kia’s next-gen Sportage will eliminate traditional ICE-only variants, at least for Europe or Korea (not the U.S.), offering only three powertrain options: mild hybrid (MHEV), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). This shift is a response to changing consumer demands and regulatory adjustments in major markets like North America and Europe.
The decision to unify the Sportage lineup under hybrid technology stems from a temporary stagnation in pure EV demand. Factors such as high EV prices, charging infrastructure challenges, and maintenance costs have slowed the transition to fully electric vehicles. Meanwhile, hybrid sales continue to surge, providing a practical alternative with improved efficiency and lower emissions.
