The redesigned 2016 Kia Sorento has taken the midsize SUV’s small overlap front rating from poor to good, earning the vehicle a TOP SAFETY PICK award.
[ads id=”0″ style=”float:left;padding:9px;”]In the small overlap crash test, the driver space of the new 2016 Kia Sorento was maintained well, with maximum intrusion of less than 4 inches at the footrest. The dummy’s movement was well-controlled, and the front and side curtain airbags worked well together to keep the head away from any stiff structure or outside objects. Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity.
It’s a marked improvement from the previous generation Sorento. In the test of the 2014 model, the driver’s space was seriously compromised, with intrusion measuring as much as 11 inches at the parking brake pedal.
The side curtain airbag didn’t deploy, and the dummy’s head barely contacted the front airbag before sliding off the left side, as the steering column moved to the right. Measures from the dummy indicated a high likelihood of injuries to the left lower leg and possible injuries to the left thigh and knee in a crash of this severity.
Introduced in 2012, the small overlap test replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or a utility pole.
Like the previous generation, the 2016 Kia Sorento earns good ratings in the Institute’s moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. The across-the-board good ratings mean the Sorento qualifies for 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK. The award is given to vehicles that earn a good or acceptable small overlap rating and good ratings in the other four crashworthiness tests.
The Sorento is available with optional forward collision warning, earning it a basic rating for front crash prevention.
Really good news, it shows how Hunday-Kia is working hard to improve its products. But, to be honest, even though Sorento has been awarded with “Top Safety Pick”, why not fight for “Top Safety Pick +” award, I mean, once the car has the “Advance Smart Cruise Control” feature, why not to implement the auto braking feature???
I can’t understand why Subaru, from Fuji Heavy Indutries, being a smaller company than HyundaiKia, why Subaru has this feature since 2-3 years ago… and HyundaiKia doesn’t…
I was disappointed with the Forte/Cerato’s small overlap score. Even the improved 2015 model is just acceptable.
Sharing the same platform with Hyundai’s Elantra which earned a good rating, the Kia should have done better.
Yeah, I’m with you but a long ago I read about this small overlaps and according to modification de car need to pass the small overlap, is including a bigger front aluminum bar as you can see in the picture attached
It’s from an Alfa, but I think its ok to explain this: Check the differences on the extended front bar on the US-spec to pass US-small overlap than the European spec. Maybe this is the problem on the Forte. After the poor results, they added this extensions but maybe is not enough.

Why do you think KIA gets better and better in every way? It has definitely to do with asian mentality but also with the brand KIA because it just invests its income for good staff, new technology that makes everyday life very easy and finally for safety as you can see above, unlike the german and other european brands do, giving you expensive junk shit for lots of money nowadays. And tis money largely go to media to spread quality and other lies . But i ask myself how long they will able to do that because quality, beauty and passion will finally prevail.
Greetings from the Turk to all KIA supporters.
