The traditional C-segment hatchback is facing an existential crisis in Europe, and Hyundai is the latest manufacturer preparing to pivot. Recent statements from Hyundai Europe CEO Xavier Martinet indicate that the long-running i30 hatchback will be retired without a direct, conventional successor.
As the brand evaluates how to fill this upcoming vacancy in its lineup, an alternative direction could lie in more emotive, distinct body styles. Renowned digital artist Kelsonik has provided a glimpse into what a premium alternative could look like, drafting an all-new Hyundai Elantra Wagon rendering that reimagines the compact segment with a sleek, elongated roofline.
The Declining Business Case for the Traditional Hatchback
The decision to move away from the traditional i30 format stems from shifting consumer habits and tightening profit margins. The model has already been absent from the UK market for a year, and its remaining footprint in mainland Europe is nearing its end.
According to Martinet, the volume dynamics of the compact hatchback segment no longer justify a multi-billion euro investment for a fourth generation:
"There might be a reason why we don't talk much about it. The problem is that in this segment the demand is not growing, and it's also a vehicle that historically was mostly a fleet vehicle, on which the profit is not so high."
Martinet added that a small volume of retail sales could not offset the low-margin fleet contracts, noting that when evaluating the entire landscape, "the business case is not extremely compelling."
Hyundai is not alone in this realization. The European automotive landscape has seen a rapid contraction in this space, with established names like the Ford Focus, Kia Ceed, and Renault Megane either discontinued or marked for termination. While the Volkswagen Golf, Peugeot 308, and Toyota Corolla persist, the segment as a whole has lost significant ground to mid-sized crossovers and dedicated EV platforms like the new Ioniq 3.
Reimagining the Compact Segment: The Elantra Wagon Rendering
With the i30 lifecycle drawing to a close, Martinet hinted that any future offering in this footprint would take a completely different shape: "We might still have some answers coming, but it might be a different answer to the one we've got so far."
While a crossover remains the most corporate-friendly solution, Kelsonik’s new rendering explores a more sophisticated, design-forward path using the All-New Avante model (known as the Elantra in North America).
The digital concept transforms the sharp, geometric lines of the latest Avante sedan into an aggressive Wagon. By extending the roofline into a steeply raked rear tailgate, the design preserves a low, sporting stance while dramatically improving cargo practicality. Up front, it integrates the brand's latest signature lighting signature, complemented by a lowered suspension setup and larger, dark-finish alloy wheels that give it a highly premium, planted appearance.
A production vehicle of this nature would allow Hyundai to capture buyers who want the utility of an estate or SUV but refuse to compromise on driving dynamics or aerodynamic efficiency.
