These exclusive spy photos show the new curved screen of the Genesis G90 facelift for the first time. They also suggest something unusual for a Genesis: the display seems designed to disappear when the car is switched off.
Genesis has not explained how the system works, so what follows is our reading of the photos. The G90 facelift is confirmed for December, so we should have the answer soon.
A Screen That Hides Away
The screen sits in the center of the dashboard, right next to the instrument cluster, and it is clearly running on this prototype. Here is what we think it does:
With the car on: the screen appears to rise from the upper part of the dashboard and then stand upright.
With the car off: it would retract out of sight, leaving a cleaner dashboard.
That would change the character of the cabin. Most luxury cars now leave a large black screen in view even when parked. If this works as we expect, the G90 would look more like a traditional luxury sedan once you switch it off.
Three Dials Instead Of One Long Display
The photos also give another clear look at the three round gauges with metallic rings that we saw in earlier G90 interior leaks. Together with a hidden screen, they would leave those three dials as the main feature of the dashboard when the car is off.
The software looks like Pleos Connect, which we have already seen on this car, although the reflections make it hard to read the details. The steering wheel in one photo carries a Volkswagen badge, which is most likely there to hide the real wheel on this prototype.
What We Still Do Not Know
How it moves: we have not seen the mechanism working, so the movement is our interpretation.
Screen size: Genesis has not revealed it.
Availability: we do not know if the hidden screen will be standard or limited to certain versions and markets.
Our Take
A disappearing screen would be a smart way to make the G90 stand out in a segment full of ever larger displays. Prototypes can change, but with the launch this close, what we see here should be close to the final car. You can read everything else about the car in our G90 facelift guide.
