Hyundai is officially returning to its roots. In a move that will thrill driving enthusiasts across Europe, the Korean automaker has confirmed in an interview with AutoCar that it is resurrecting the acclaimed Hyundai i20 N hot hatch, and we can have a first look at it thanks to our colleagues at Gotcha Cars.
The announcement marks a significant shift in strategy, bridging the massive price gap left when Hyundai temporarily phased out its petrol-powered performance cars to focus on high-end electric vehicles.
Why the Hyundai i20 N is Returning
When the original i20 N was withdrawn from sale after a brief three-year run, it left a massive void in the affordable performance market. Hyundai’s current flagship electric performance cars, like the critically acclaimed Ioniq 5 N and upcoming Ioniq 6 N, are engineering marvels but command premium price tags starting around £65,000 in the UK.
Hyundai’s global R&D boss, Manfred Harrer, acknowledged that this pricing leaves younger buyers and hardcore enthusiasts out in the cold.
"An i20 N for Europe is a must," Harrer stated. "The gap is too big [between petrol N models and EVs]. We need this entry-level back for our fans, and we are working intensively to do this sooner rather than later."
This sentiment was backed up by N division boss Joon Park, who clarified that the performance sub-brand is not limiting itself strictly to an all-EV line-up, despite media perception.

Performance Expectations: What's Under the Hood?
While full specifications remain under wraps, Harrer hinted that the new model will likely use existing technology as its foundation.
The Powertrain: Industry insiders expect the new hot hatch to utilize a heavily modified version of the 1.6-litre four-cylinder hybrid engine currently found in mainstream Hyundai models.
Track-Ready Dynamics: Despite the hybrid setup, the focus remains entirely on driving dynamics. Harrer confirmed that prototypes are already undergoing rigorous testing.
To achieve this, engineers are focusing heavily on tweaking the battery management system to ensure sustained performance during hard track driving. Harrer reassured purists: "It feels sporty – don't worry about that."
Shifting Landscape: The Competitors
The original 2021 Hyundai i20 N fought in a crowded segment against giants like the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI. However, the automotive landscape has changed drastically, leaving the upcoming i20 N to face a completely different set of rivals.
By arriving with a hybrid-petrol powertrain, the i20 N will carve out a unique niche, offering a lightweight, highly engaging alternative to the growing crop of heavy electric hot hatches.
