Hyundai Tucson Surpasses 11 Million Cumulative Global Sales

Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson has officially crossed 10.6 million cumulative global sales (10,616,102 units as of August 2026, excluding the China-exclusive ix35), cementing its position as Hyundai Motor Company’s flagship compact SUV. When including the 554,049 units sold of China’s dedicated ix35 model, total sales surpass 11.17 million units(11,170,151 units). This milestone makes the Tucson only the third Hyundai nameplate in history to breach the 10-million mark—following the Avante (Elantra) and Accent—and the first Korean SUV ever to achieve this historic volume. Marking the next chapter of this global success story, Hyundai will unveil the all-new 2027 TUCSON during a world premiere in Long Island City, New York, on Thursday, October 1, at 5:15 p.m. ET.

22 Years of Relentless Growth Across Four Generations

Since its initial debut in 2004, the Tucson has served as Hyundai's volume leader, securing the title of Hyundai’s No. 1 best-selling vehicle worldwide for five consecutive years from 2021 to 2025:

  • 2021: 560,000 units

  • 2022: 620,000 units

  • 2023: 690,000 units

  • 2024: 640,000 units

  • 2025: 630,000 units

The model hit 1 million cumulative sales in 2008, 5 million in 2016 (8 years later), and crossed the 10 million threshold in 2025 (9 years later), sustaining steady expansion over more than two decades.

Generation-by-Generation Sales Performance

  • 1st Generation (2004–2016): Sold approximately 1.62 million units over 13 years, averaging 124,000 units annually while building the model's global foundation.

  • 2nd Generation (2009–2018): Reached roughly 2.50 million units across 10 years—a 1.5-fold volume increase driven by localized overseas assembly.

  • 3rd Generation (2015–2022): Delivered around 3.125 million units over 8 years, climbing more than 25% compared to the 2nd generation despite a shorter sales run. It also recorded the nameplate's all-time annual peak in 2016 with 735,173 units.

  • 4th Generation (2020–August 2026): Generated approximately 3.373 million units in roughly 6 years and 8 months, marking the highest volume to date. With an annual pace of 506,000 units, its yearly delivery rate grew more than fourfold compared to the original generation.

Despite pandemic-related disruptions lowering 2020 annual sales to 466,663 units, production capacity expansion and the rollout of hybrid powertrains drove a sharp rebound, hitting 698,786 units in 2023.

The Strategic Shift: Localized Global Production

The Tucson's long-term commercial success stems from transforming an export-centric vehicle into a locally manufactured global platform:

  • Production Localization: In 2005, local manufacturing accounted for just 4.0% of overseas sales. By 2010, that figure rose to 44.2%, climbing to 73.1% in 2016 and 76.0% in 2023.

  • Cumulative Manufacturing Breakdown: Out of 9,663,073 total overseas sales, 60.6% (5,858,926 units) were built directly at local production facilities, such as plants in the United States and the Czech Republic. This localized footprint protects against foreign exchange volatility and tariff exposure.

  • Overseas Dominance: Over 22 years, domestic South Korean sales totaled 953,029 units—representing just 9.0% of global volume (excluding China). Overseas markets account for 91.0% (or 91.4% including China), proving the Tucson was designed primarily for the international market.

The US Market: Powerhouse of the Tucson Brand

The United States represents the single largest contributor to the Tucson's global volume:

  • Total US Volume: Since entering the US market in 2004, cumulative sales reached 2,227,154 units (1,953,485 internal combustion engine models and 273,669 hybrids).

  • Global Market Share: The US alone accounts for 19.9% of total global sales and 23.1% of all overseas Tucson sales—meaning nearly one out of every four Tucsons sold outside South Korea lands in an American driveway.

  • Hybrid Momentum: Since the introduction of the hybrid powertrain on the 4th-generation platform in 2021, hybrid adoption in the US has accelerated:

    • 2021: 12.3% of US Tucson sales

    • 2022: 17.8%

    • 2023: 19.2%

    • 2024: 32.5%

    • 2025: 31.0%

    • 2026 (through August): 27.8% (consistently sustaining around the 30% mark)

Global Safety Accolades and Industry Recognition

The Tucson's reputation as a reliable family vehicle is backed by top tier crash tests and industry awards:

  • IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety): The 2nd generation earned Top Safety Pick (TSP) status for four consecutive years starting in 2010. The 3rd generation upgraded to Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+), and the 4th generation has retained the rigorous TSP+ rating for five consecutive years (2022–2026).

  • NHTSA: Awarded an overall 5-Star Safety Rating beginning with the 1st generation and consistently maintaining 5 stars across the 3rd and 4th generations under updated safety criteria.

  • Euro NCAP: Scored the maximum 5-star rating across the 2nd (2010), 3rd (2015), and 4th (2021) generations.

  • Media Honors: Named "Best Compact SUV for Families" by U.S. News & World Report for five straight years (2022–2026), praising its cabin utility, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Warning, and Bluelink parental monitoring tools. The UK's Top Gear named it "Best Family Car" and "Best Value SUV" in 2022, while What Car? recognized it as the "Best Used Family SUV" in 2025.

Next Chapter: The All-New 5th-Generation Tucson (NX5)

Building on the foundation of the 4th-generation model, Hyundai has unveiled the 5th-generation full redesign (Project Name: NX5).

Departing from the previous generation's fluid lines, the NX5 adopts Hyundai’s new "Art of Steel" design philosophy, featuring an upright, boxy SUV stance, expanded exterior dimensions, an enlarged cabin, and the brand’s latest connectivity suite.

Following its domestic debut, the 5th-generation Tucson will roll out sequentially across North America, Europe, and other global regions starting in 2027. Backed by expanded hybrid offerings and entrenched local manufacturing, the nameplate is positioned to continue its run as an international benchmark.
