Kia’s performance badge has expanded rapidly from warm hatchbacks to high-output electric crossovers, but the brand may still be missing its ultimate dynamic statement. In an interview with Autocar, Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D chief Manfred Harrer opened the door to a higher-echelon performance tier while making a strong case for a dedicated halo sports car to anchor the sub-brand.
Open to a 'GT-R' Tier, but First: A Dedicated GT Car
As reported by Autocar, Kia's modern GT lineup balances real-world usability and high-speed refinement rather than lap-record aggression. However, when pressed on whether Kia could introduce an even sharper stratum—akin to a hardcore "GT-R" moniker—Harrer expressed genuine interest.
"I like the idea," Harrer told Autocar. "You see a lot of car makers going that way, so why not? But I'm more [minded] to first talk about a dedicated model showing what GT stands for."
Rather than simply badging up existing production crossovers with stiffer springs and track-oriented software, Harrer believes the primary objective should be establishing a bespoke machine that embodies Kia's grand touring ethos.

What Would a Standalone Kia Halo Car Look Like?
Harrer, whose background includes engineering stints at Porsche and BMW, is uniquely positioned to push bespoke performance projects through Hyundai Motor Group’s development pipelines.
While existing offerings such as the EV6 GT deliver massive acceleration in a dual-motor crossover shell, enthusiasts have long clamoured for a true spiritual successor to the discontinued Kia Stinger GT. A standalone, ground-up GT model would offer distinct advantages:
Purpose-Built Packaging: A lower centre of gravity, sleeker proportions, and tailored aerodynamic efficiency free from the taller crossover form factor.
Pure Grand Touring Dynamics: Emphasising steering purity, high-speed stability, and cross-continental comfort over pure track gimmickry.
Brand-Defining Halo Impact: Serving as the definitive dynamic benchmark for what the letters "GT" mean across Kia's broader lineup.
Whether this dedicated vehicle materialises as an all-electric sports saloon or an ultra-sleek fastback coupé,Harrer’s priority is clear: define the core philosophy of Kia GT first, before chasing extreme sub-tiers.
