Hyundai Motor Company has announced a significant recall affecting approximately 90,000 Genesis vehicles in the United States due to a potential engine fire risk. The recall spans several models, including the 2015-2016 Genesis, 2017-2019 Genesis G80 and G90, and some 2019 Genesis G70 cars. This action follows a notification from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on February 16, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.
The problem stems from the possibility of water infiltrating the cars’ starter solenoids, a critical component of the ignition motors. This infiltration can lead to an electrical short, posing a risk of an engine compartment fire. In response to these findings, the NHTSA has issued a safety advisory urging owners of the affected vehicles to park them outdoors and away from structures until the recall procedures are completed.
Hyundai’s investigation into the matter has identified 12 incidents of heat issues in the United States from September 2017 through July 2023. However, the company has reported that these incidents have not resulted in any crashes, injuries, or fatalities.
As part of the recall measures, authorized dealerships will install parts kits designed to rectify the identified issue at no charge to the vehicle owners. This recall is part of a broader context in which Hyundai and Kia have recalled over 6.4 million vehicles for various reasons since 2016, with many recalls concerning brake fluid leaks that could lead to engine fires.
2017-2019 Genesis G80 are also affected
The NHTSA has also taken further steps by launching an investigation in November 2023 into the adequacy of the recalls initiated by the Korean automakers, underscoring the regulatory body’s commitment to ensuring automotive safety.
Vehicle owners affected by the recall can expect to receive notification letters by April 13, 2024, with instructions on how to proceed. Hyundai has provided a customer service contact number (1-855-371-9460) for owners seeking more information. Additionally, the recall numbers are listed as 254(H) for the Genesis models and 018G(G) for the Genesis G70.
Owners are also encouraged to contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline for further assistance. This recall highlights Hyundai’s proactive measures to ensure the safety of its customers and the integrity of its vehicles. Owners of the affected models are urged to take immediate action to ensure their safety and comply with the recall instructions.
For more details on the recall and safety measures, owners can visit the NHTSA’s website or contact Hyundai customer service directly. This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of automotive safety and the need for vigilance regarding vehicle maintenance and recalls.
