Hyundai Motor and Kia recently hosted ‘Heat Tech Day’ at ‘Crest 72’ in Seoul, where they introduced their new radiant heat heating system, designed to provide rapid warmth to passengers during winter. This innovative system has already been applied to the Kia EV9, that could increase the range by 17%.
A Breakthrough in Vehicle Heating: The Radiant Heat Heating System
The radiant heat heating system is a cutting-edge technology that targets the passenger’s legs with radiant heat, quickly warming their bodies in cold weather. This system works by integrating a heating element that emits radiant heat, ensuring passengers feel warmth within minutes. Hyundai Motor and Kia emphasized that this system can reduce energy consumption by 17% when used alongside traditional air conditioning, making it both an efficient and comfortable solution for winter driving.
Unlike conventional heating methods, which often result in dry air that can cause discomfort, the radiant heat system provides a more natural and gentle warmth. By focusing on the lower body, the system enhances passenger comfort without the direct skin contact with dry air, which is often a common complaint with standard air conditioning systems.
Enhancing Electric Vehicle Efficiency
One of the most significant advantages of the radiant heat heating system is its potential to improve electric vehicle (EV) performance in winter. By reducing the energy required for interior heating, this technology can extend the driving range of electric vehicles during colder months, addressing a key concern for EV owners.
The system’s effectiveness lies in its advanced high-temperature film heating element, which can generate heat up to 110℃. This heat is then emitted through fabric materials that produce far-infrared rays, offering a warm and comfortable temperature for the human body. Additionally, the system includes an anti-burn feature that automatically lowers the temperature if it detects any direct contact with the skin, preventing potential burns and ensuring passenger safety.
Practical Applications in the Kia EV9
During the event, the radiant heat heating system was showcased in the Kia EV9, with nine heating positions strategically placed throughout the vehicle. These include five areas in the driver’s seat, such as the steering column, door, and center console, and four areas in the passenger seat, including the door, center console, and glove box.
A researcher at the Hyundai Motor and Kia Integrated Thermal Management Research Lab, highlighted the efficiency of this system, stating, “Radiation heating is one of the fastest ways to eliminate cold during winter. Our radiation heating system not only provides quick warmth but also ensures a non-drying, comfortable environment, making winter driving more enjoyable for our customers.”
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Hyundai Motor and Kia plan to incorporate the radiant heat heating system into their upcoming vehicle models, signaling a significant step forward in automotive comfort and energy efficiency. It is expected that the first model to come with this feature will be Genesis GV90 flagship Electric SUV.
