The IONIQ OWNERS QLUB in Japan, organized the third annual EV Summer Camp from August 3-5, 2024, at the TREE LINE chillax field campsite in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. This event showcased the potential of electric vehicles for eco-friendly outdoor adventures.
KCB’s good friend WRD team was invited by Ryo Tsujie who is one of the organizers of the IONIQ OWNERS QLUB.
Key highlights:
- Record Participation: Approximately 54 cars and 131 participants attended, a significant increase from 3 cars in the first year and 30 cars in the second year, demonstrating growing interest in EV camping.
- Diverse EV Representation: A wide range of electric vehicles participated, including Hyundai IONIQ 5, KONA, many Tesla models, Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi iMiEV, BYD Dolphin, and BMW i3 showcasing the expanding EV market. There were even Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo.
- Off-Grid, Eco-Friendly Camping: The event demonstrated all-electric camping using EV power sources, eliminating the need for generators and reducing CO2 emissions. Participants used their vehicles’ power for various camping needs, from cooking to lighting.
- Zero-Emission Activities: Food stalls powered by EVs, demonstrated practical applications of vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology. The IONIQ 5’s ability to extract up to 1600W of power using a V2L connector was particularly highlighted.
- Community Building: The camp included various activities fostering a sense of community among EV enthusiasts. These included:
- EV Night Meet discussions on topics like self-driving technology
- Test drives of new EV models, including the IONIQ 5N
- A bingo tournament with EV-related prizes
- Workshops and exhibitions from EV-related companies and enthusiasts
- Hyundai EV Ramen booth
- Sustainability Focus: The event promoted eco-friendly camping practices and sustainable travel, aligning with growing concerns about climate change. The absence of generator noise and exhaust fumes contributed to a more pleasant camping experience.
- Versatility Demonstration: Participants showcased various camping styles, from car sleeping to tent camping, illustrating the adaptability of EVs for different outdoor preferences.
The success of EV Summer Camp 2024 highlights the increasing versatility of electric vehicles for outdoor adventures and their potential for off-grid, emission-free camping experiences. It also demonstrates the strong and growing community of EV enthusiasts in Japan, particularly among Hyundai EV owners. The event serves as a model for future eco-friendly camping events and underscores the practical benefits of EV technology beyond daily commuting.
