Our colleagues at Healer TV captured for the first time the Korean/Western prototype of the KIA EV5, slated for mass production in the third quarter of 2024, this semi-mid-sized electric SUV will be made in Korea for the local market as well as for the European and other overseas markets.
A New Chapter for Kia’s EV Series
The EV5 marks a significant milestone as Kia completes its popular EV series with the EV3, EV4, and now the EV5. Produced under the project name ‘OV1’, the EV5 will be the first exclusive electric vehicle manufactured at the Kia Autoland Gwangju plant in Korea. This new production base will solidify Gwangju’s role as a hub for dedicated EV manufacturing, complementing Kia’s Hwaseong facility, which produces the EV6, EV9, and other models.
Initially developed as a strategic model for the Chinese market, the EV5 is gaining traction globally. It has already proven its versatility in China, where it serves as a patrol car and taxi, praised for its spacious design and competitive pricing.
Key Features and Specifications of the EV5
The EV5 offers an impressive combination of design, technology, and performance, setting it apart in the competitive EV landscape:
Dimensions
- At 4,615mm in length and with a wheelbase of 2,750mm, the EV5 boasts dimensions comparable to the Kia Sportage, offering ample interior space.
Battery Options
- The Chinese model features a cost-efficient lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
- The Korean and Western versions are equipped with a highly efficient, but more expensive, nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) battery, ensuring superior performance.
Range
- With an 82kWh battery capacity, the EV5 will deliver a driving range between 600–700 km on a single charge.
A Strategic Production Approach
Kia’s decision to produce the EV5 in Korea and China highlights its two-track strategy for navigating global markets. While the Yancheng factory in China focuses on emerging markets, the Gwangju plant will target regions with free trade agreements (FTAs) with Korea. This strategic production split minimizes tariff risks and aligns with shifting global trade dynamics.
Market Outlook and Ripple Effect
The EV5 is more than just an addition to Kia’s lineup—it’s a market disruptor. With its semi-mid-sized SUV design, it fills a critical gap in Kia’s EV portfolio, catering to both budget-conscious and premium buyers. The EV5 is expected to surpass the smaller EV3 and the upcoming EV4 hatchback in popularity due to its superior marketability and performance.
Additionally, the EV5’s role as the first exclusive electric vehicle from the Gwangju plant underscores Kia’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. The model is also expected to drive domestic and international EV adoption, thanks to its competitive pricing and advanced features.
The Future of Kia’s EVs: What’s Next?
As the EV5 gears up for mass production, Kia is also working on the EV4 European model, set to be manufactured in the first quarter of 2024. With the Kia Slovakia factory being a potential production site, Kia continues to expand its footprint across key global markets.
The EV5 represents not just the culmination of Kia’s current EV strategy but also a launchpad for future innovations. Its strong blend of performance, affordability, and advanced features positions it as a leader in the EV market, capturing both Korean and global audiences.
