Hyundai Unveils XP2 Project, GV90 to be First to Have SDV Tech

Hyundai Motor is taking a significant step in the evolution of autonomous vehicles with the launch of its groundbreaking “XP2” project. This initiative focuses on developing software-oriented vehicles (SDVs) to optimize autonomous driving functionalities. Unlike conventional prototyping methods, the XP2 project aims to produce over 1,000 vehicles, prioritizing real-world testing of self-driving capabilities. The company plans to debut SDV technology in the GV90 by 2026.

Leadership and Vision

Hyundai Motor President Song Chang-hyun, head of the Future Vehicle Platform (AVP) headquarters, leads the XP2 project. President Song envisions completing the development of the SDV “Pace Car” by 2026. If successful, this milestone could position Hyundai as a leading self-driving software company, rivaling industry giants like Tesla and Huawei.

End-to-End Autonomous Driving: Hyundai’s Strategic Shift

XP2 marks Hyundai’s transition to the “end-to-end” autonomous driving method, a significant departure from its previous modular approach. The modular method relies on various sensors such as radar and LiDAR and operates using preloaded maps. While accurate, this system falters when maps are outdated or road variables emerge.

The end-to-end method, popularized by Tesla, uses cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret real-time traffic data and make autonomous decisions. Although slightly less precise than modular systems, its adaptability and scalability make it a preferred choice for global markets. This method’s ability to function anywhere with locally learned data eliminates dependency on extensive sensor hardware and preloaded maps.

Competitors in the End-to-End Arena

Globally, Tesla and Huawei lead the end-to-end autonomous driving domain. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) service is already available in the U.S., while Huawei’s ADS system powers vehicles like China’s Aito. Huawei’s recent ADS 3.0 demonstration revealed near-human-level driving precision, showcasing advanced capabilities in avoiding obstacles and navigating complex traffic scenarios.

Hyundai’s adoption of the end-to-end approach underscores its determination to compete on this frontier. Moving away from LiDAR-dependent modular systems mitigates reliance on Chinese-dominated sensor markets and aligns with the demands of export-oriented markets like the U.S.

Large-Scale Production and Data Collection

A standout feature of the XP2 project is its plan to produce over 1,000 vehicles—far exceeding typical prototype quantities. Industry experts view this as a strategic move to amass valuable driving data. In end-to-end systems, data collection is crucial for AI training, ensuring improved decision-making across diverse driving conditions. This approach mirrors Tesla’s strategy of leveraging local data for market-specific enhancements.

Collaborative Efforts and Roadmap

Hyundai recently held an autonomous driving town hall meeting at its Namyang Research Institute to align software and hardware teams with its self-driving roadmap. President Song emphasized that the next five years will be critical for automakers to establish their autonomous driving credentials.

According to Hyundai’s 2024 CEO Investor Day, the SDV platform will debut in Genesis’s flagship electric SUV, the GV90, in 2026, before rolling out to all models by 2027. Hyundai is also collaborating with domestic and international partners like 42dot and Motional to accelerate its progress.
