현대차그룹이 남양연구소에서 내연기관 엔진 개발을 중단한다. 현대차와 기아, 제네시스는 더 이상 새로운 ICE 차량을 개발하지 않는다.
최근 현대차그룹은 알버트 비어만의 퇴임을 시작으로 연구개발본부의 역대 최대 규모 조직 개편을 발표한 바 있다. 남양연구소에는 1만2000명의 연구 인력이 근무 중이다. 이러한 움직임이 비어만 퇴임의 이유일까?
이에 따라 회사는 기존 파워트레인 팀을 신설 전동화 개발 팀으로 전환했다. 엔진개발센터는 완전히 폐쇄되었고, 모든 파워트레인 관련 센터는 전동화 관련 조직으로 변경됐다. 동시에 현대차는 배터리개발센터를 설립해 미래 배터리 기술 확보에 집중하기로 결정했다.
현대차는 또한 전기차 개발 일정을 최대한 단축하기 위해 연구개발 부서 간 벽을 허물었다. 기존에는 차급별로 프로젝트관리팀과 통합제품개발팀이 있었지만, 이를 설계 아키텍처부터 양산까지 아우르는 차량 개발 조직으로 통합했다.
예상된 움직임이었지만 결국 아쉬운 소식이다. 여러분의 생각은 어떠신가?

Stupid as hell. So I guess now Hyundai/Kia are going to try to be a mainstream Tesla. Notice Tesla is a niche market car. Not a main stream vehicle. The infrastructure isn't set up to do this yet dummies! But Hyundai/kia is a brand i have little regard for anyway so it really doesn't matter.
I had i30 once. Now i have Tucson. The next one will be for sure not Hyundai nor Kia and for sur will be ICE!
One of the benefits of having all electrical vehicles is that the majority of problems will be electrically related. Batteries, motors, devices and the ever present wiring. What's left is the body both interior and exterior like axels, steering, seating plus glass plus whatever the manufacturer adds to the vehicle
The fuel century is over and it will be hard to sell these cars in future. Better to sell EVs oder stop business?
