Hyundai Motor Co. on Tuesday unveiled a turbo version of its three-door hatchback Veloster, packed with more power and bulkier exterior. Scheduled to go on sale Wednesday, the facelift equips the mid-sized 2+1 sports coupe with a turbo 1.6 liter GDi engine capable of pulling 204 horsepower and peak torque of 27 kilogram-meters, up from 140 horsepower and 17 kilogram-meters. Korean giant Kia is expected to produce a turbocharged GDi Kia Rio hot hatch to combat the Volkswagen Polo GTI. Speaking with CarAdvice at the Geneva Motor Show, the company’s European head of powertrain development, Joachim Hahn, all but confirmed a turbocharged Rio was on the way. (more…)

At the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Hyundai will reveal a new turbocharged version of the 1+2 door Veloster sports coupe. Through the addition of a turbocharger, engineers at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, have boosted power output and increased low-end torque to best suit European driving tastes and enhance driver enjoyment. Debuted at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, the 2013 Veloster Turbo adding some more power and a more aggressive look to the funky three-door hatch. We felt that an additional 63 horsepower and 71 pound-feet of torque was just what the little Hyundai needed, and we were especially digging the available matte gray paint once the Veloster hits showrooms this summer.
