Kia already launched its first-ever Tasman, an all-new ladder-frame pickup and our colleagues at Kelsonik made us think what if the South Korean automaker decides to launch an off-road SUV as a head-to-head with the likes of the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler?.

Design and Build

The Tasman SUV sports rendering has a robust and muscular design, with a clear focus on durability and off-road capability. The vehicle features reinforced body structures, protective skid plates, and an aggressive stance that not only looks the part but is also functionally adept at handling challenging terrains. Its exterior design appeals to both traditional off-road enthusiasts and a younger crowd looking for style and substance.

Power and Performance

Under the hood, the Tasman SUV doesn’t disappoint. Kia could offer the awaited V6 engine that the pick up customers will miss, at least, at the beginning. This strategy not only caters to those seeking thrilling off-road experiences but also to environmentally conscious drivers looking to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing performance.

Off-Road Features

Kia understands that off-road capability is more than just aesthetics and power. The Tasman SUV could be equipped with an advanced 4×4 drive system that includes selectable modes tailored for different terrains such as rocks, mud, sand, and snow. This should be complemented by cutting-edge off-road technology, including a terrain management system, hill descent control, and an innovative navigation system designed specifically for off-road conditions.

Customization and Accessories

Recognizing the personal connection drivers often feel with their off-road vehicles, Kia offers an array of customization options for the Tasman. Customers can choose from various trims, off-road accessory packages, and personalization features to make their Tasman uniquely theirs. This level of customization not only enhances the ownership experience but also strengthens the bond between the vehicle and its owner.

Market Impact and Expectations

In 2023, Ford sold a total of 127,758 units of the Bronco, which was a significant increase from the 94,031 units sold in 2022. This represented a growth of approximately 35.87% year-over-year. Breaking down the 2023 sales by quarter, Ford sold 29,871 units in Q1, 55,392 in Q2, 24,240 in Q3, and 18,255 in Q4.

As for the Jeep Wrangler, it maintained its popularity but experienced a slight decline in sales. For example, during the second quarter of 2023, Jeep Wrangler sales were reported at 46,671 units, marking a 13% decline from the previous period.

These figures illustrate a competitive landscape in the off-road SUV market, with the Ford Bronco showing strong growth and narrowing the sales gap with the Jeep Wrangler, albeit the Wrangler still maintains a lead in overall sales. Could Kia take a piece of this cake?
