Kia America is taking a significant step to enhance the electric vehicle (EV) ownership experience. Beginning September 4, 2024, customers purchasing a new 2024 or 2025 Kia EV9 or a 2024 Kia EV6 will receive a North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter free of charge. This initiative grants access to more than 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers across the United States, expanding Kia-accessible DC charge points by over 83%.

Expanding Charging Accessibility

The move to provide free NACS adapters underscores Kia’s commitment to electrified mobility and customer convenience.

“As a leader in electrified mobility, it’s important Kia provide our EV customers the best ownership experience possible, and offering NACS adapters is a great way to open up a vast number of charge points across North America,” said Eric Watson, VP of Sales Operations at Kia America. “Now, with access to this sprawling network of DC fast chargers, our EV owners can feel even more confident in their ability to reach far-flung destinations on electricity.”

Eligibility and Availability

New Customers: Those who take delivery of a new 2024 or 2025 Kia EV9 or 2024 Kia EV6 from September 4, 2024, and onwards will receive the NACS adapter free of charge.

Existing Customers: Kia EV6, EV9, and Niro EV owners who took delivery prior to September 4, 2024, will have the option to purchase an adapter from authorized Kia dealers at a later date.

Customer delivery of the free adapters is anticipated to begin in early 2025. Access to the DC fast chargers is planned for January 15, 2025.

Types of NACS Adapters Offered

To maximize convenience and compatibility, Kia will provide three types of NACS adapters:

1. NACS to CCS1 Adapter: Allows existing Kia EVs to DC fast charge using NACS chargers.

2. CCS1 to NACS Adapter: Enables NACS-equipped Kia EVs to charge on existing CCS DC chargers.

3. J1772 to NACS Adapter: Allows NACS-equipped Kia EVs to AC-charge on existing Level 2 chargers.

Enhancing EV Range and Confidence

Kia EVs are renowned for their impressive range. For instance, the EV6 RWD Light Long Range model offers an EPA-estimated 310 miles on a full charge. With expanded access to a vast network of DC fast chargers, Kia EV owners can confidently embark on longer journeys, knowing that charging infrastructure is readily available.

Integration with Kia Access App

In early 2025, Kia EV owners will gain enhanced access and payment capabilities through the Kia Access app following a vehicle software upgrade:

Search and Locate: Find available charging stations directly from the EV’s infotainment screen or compatible smartphones.

Real-Time Information: Access charger availability, status, and pricing.

Navigation Assistance: Receive directions to selected charging stations seamlessly.

Conclusion

Kia America’s initiative to offer free NACS adapters significantly enhances the EV ownership experience by providing greater charging accessibility and convenience. This move not only supports current EV owners but also encourages the adoption of electric vehicles by alleviating common concerns about charging infrastructure.
