Kia is taking a significant step toward advancing energy management in its electric vehicle (EV) lineup by launching Smart Charging and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) services in select regions of Europe and the United States. This initiative marks the first phase of Hyundai Motor Group’s broader plan to introduce Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) services globally.

Smart Charging Launches in the Netherlands

Starting in late February, Kia’s Smart Charging service is rolling out in the Netherlands, offering EV owners a way to optimize their charging costs. By leveraging fluctuating electricity rates throughout the day, Smart Charging ensures that EVs are charged during off-peak hours when electricity rates are lower. This cost-saving feature is accessible via the Kia Smart Charge app, available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app is compatible with any home charger and seamlessly integrates data from the vehicle and energy supplier to determine the most cost-effective charging times.

Later this year, Kia plans to introduce a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) service, allowing EV owners to send surplus energy back to the grid. This initiative will enable customers to trade excess electricity, further enhancing the cost-efficiency and sustainability of EV ownership.

V2H Service Debuts in the U.S.

Simultaneously, Kia is launching its V2H service on February 28 in seven U.S. states, including California. The V2H service allows the Kia EV9 to serve as an emergency power source during outages, reducing disruptions. Additionally, it enables energy cost savings by storing electricity when rates are low and discharging power back into the home when rates are higher.

Kia is working closely with regulatory authorities to expand the V2H service to additional regions and vehicle models. The company is also collaborating with major utilities in California to extend its Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) program, reinforcing its commitment to energy innovation and efficiency.

Transforming EVs into Energy Hubs

Through these initiatives, Kia is positioning its EV lineup as more than just transportation solutions—they are evolving into key energy assets. By integrating Smart Charging, V2H, and V2G services, Kia aims to reduce electricity costs for customers while improving energy resilience. These advancements align with Hyundai Motor Group’s vision of a connected, energy-efficient future for EVs, solidifying Kia’s role as a leader in sustainable mobility.
