Genesis changed its “all-electric” initial plan to a new strategy based on hybrid, EREV, and full EV. According to our colleagues at Motorsjason, the next generation GV80, known internally as JX2, will be available in both EV and EREV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) models and will be built on a new dedicated, Genesis-specific platform, the so-called Trinity platform.
The All-Electric Genesis GV80 EV and EREV: The Electric Evolution
Genesis GV80 EV: This all-electric SUV, codenamed JX2, is projected to use a large 113.2 kWh battery and a motor with over 600 horsepower. It targets an impressive range of 700 to 800 km on a single charge. While the launch has been postponed to at least 2028 due to market conditions, the long-term vision remains clear.
Genesis GV80 EREV: For those who want the best of both worlds, the GV80 EREV will utilize a small gasoline engine to charge the battery. With a 40 kW battery, this model aims for a total range of over 900 km. This system will debut on the GV70 next year before being implemented in the GV80 around 2027.
The High-Performance Genesis GV80 Magma: The Ultimate Driving Machine
The highly anticipated “Magma” division is Genesis’s answer to high-performance luxury. Distinct from Hyundai’s “N” brand, Magma focuses on delivering a powerful yet comfortable driving experience.
- Performance-Focused Enhancements: The Magma model will feature significant modifications to its powertrain, suspension, and torque vectoring to create a truly dynamic and responsive vehicle.
- The Magma Philosophy: This division isn’t about creating a track-optimized race car. Instead, it aims to provide a luxurious, high-performance daily driver that excels in both power and comfort. The GV80 Magma is likely to be applied first to the Coupe version.
The Genesis Magma lineup, including the G80 and GV80, is scheduled to launch starting in 2027.
