Hyundai Motor Company used its 2025 CEO Investor Day in Manhattan for the introduction of the Genesis EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle), a new electrified model that aims to combine the driving experience of an EV with the long-distance flexibility of a hybrid.

Genesis EREV: An Electric-Like Hybrid With Over 1,000 km Range

Hyundai described the upcoming Genesis EREV as “a car that secures the same driving sensibility as an electric car and maximizes mileage.” Scheduled for release after 2026, the EREV will be introduced alongside new Genesis hybrid models and Hyundai’s next-generation eM platform designed exclusively for EVs.

One of its biggest advantages is the extended range. Thanks to its engine-powered generator system, the Genesis EREV is expected to achieve over 1,000 km on a single charge, eliminating the range anxiety often associated with pure electric cars.

How the Genesis EREV Works

Unlike a traditional hybrid, the EREV’s engine does not drive the wheels directly. Instead, it acts purely as a generator, supplying electricity to the battery when needed. This makes it a serial-type hybrid, closer to an electric car in feel, while solving the limitations of EV range.

Hyundai emphasized that the EREV allows for:

  • Smaller battery capacity (lower cost than full EVs)
  • Quieter performance compared to internal combustion engines
  • Convenient charging via plug-in capability
  • Reduced refueling stress with extended driving range

This approach mirrors earlier attempts in the market, such as the Chevrolet Volt, which briefly launched in Korea in 2017 but failed to gain traction, selling only 275 units before discontinuation.

Which Genesis Model Will Debut as the First EREV?

While Hyundai has not confirmed the exact model, industry speculation points to the Genesis GV70 SUV as the first to receive the EREV powertrain. Recent test vehicles and prior leaks suggest that this popular mid-size SUV is the prime candidate.

Key expectations include:

  • Engine: A 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, used only for power generation
  • Battery: Likely smaller than the current 84 kWh pack in the all-electric GV70, in line with Hyundai’s cost-reduction strategy
  • Transmission: Removed, as the engine won’t directly power the wheels

Genesis EREV Price Speculation

Pricing for the Genesis EREV remains uncertain. Experts suggest that while the smaller battery pack could reduce costs, the addition of an engine may offset savings. As a result, the Genesis EREV price is expected to be similar to, or possibly higher than, the current Genesis GV70 EV.

Final Thoughts

The Genesis EREV represents Hyundai’s effort to bridge the gap between electric vehicles and hybrids, offering the refinement of an EV with the practicality of extended range. With over 1,000 km of driving distance, reduced charging stress, and a likely SUV debut, it could appeal strongly to premium customers looking for long-distance capability without sacrificing luxury or technology.

As Hyundai prepares for its post-2026 electrified lineup, the Genesis EREV could become a game-changer in the luxury SUV segment.
