The automotive industry is rapidly evolving, with Chinese manufacturers surpassing legacy automakers in speed. Kia is determined to stay ahead of the curve and has already prototypes of its upcoming facelifted EV5 testing, captured thanks to our colleagues at Healer TV. Although the EV5 recently made its global debut in Australia, Korea, and Europe, the facelifted version is expected to be released in early 2027.
As Kia looks to sharpen its claws against dominant rivals like the Tesla Model Y and the BYD Sealion 7, this mid-cycle refresh promises more than just a new look—it’s a technical evolution.
The Evolution of Charging: Moving Toward “Formidable” Tech
The current EV5’s biggest hurdle has been its charging speed. To keep entry costs low, Kia opted for a 400V systemrather than the ultra-fast 800V E-GMP architecture found in the EV6 and EV9.
| Feature | Current EV5 Specs | Expected 2026 Facelift |
| System Voltage | 400V | Enhanced Efficiency / Upgraded Charging |
| Max Charging Rate | 140kW | Significant Increase Expected |
| 10% to 80% Charge | ~38 Minutes | Reduced Charging Time |
By improving battery efficiency and shortening the time spent at the plug, Kia aims to shed the “budget” charging label and secure the EV5’s position as a truly competitive long-distance cruiser.

Interior Innovations: A “Weekender” Influence
The 2026 refresh is expected to borrow heavily from the EV5 Weekender concept. This means the cabin is moving away from functional minimalism toward a high-tech, lounge-like experience, thanks to the addition of PLEOS.
- Panoramic Display: Expect a massive seamless panel that integrates the driver’s instrument cluster, the central infotainment hub, and a dedicated passenger-side screen (It is unknown whether this passenger screen will arrive in Western markets or will be limited to China).
- Refined Steering: A redesigned, more ergonomic steering wheel is rumored to replace the current version.
- Space Optimization: The center console will likely undergo a total redesign to maximize storage and user convenience, reflecting the “utility-first” philosophy of the Weekender concept.
Why the Rush?
The EV market is no longer a “build it and they will come” industry. With the Tesla Model Y consistently topping sales charts and BYD rapidly expanding its “Ocean” series (like the Sealion 7), Kia’s product planning team recognizes that staying relevant requires constant iteration and the EV5 was launched in China in August 2023, so it is time for a facelift.
The 2027 facelift isn’t just an update; it’s a strategic move to ensure the EV5 remains a top-tier choice for families transitioning to electric mobility.
