From SUV to Bed: We Render the Rugged Hyundai Boulder as a Pickup

At the 2026 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), Hyundai dropped a bombshell: the Boulder Concept. While the physical vehicle on the show floor is a rugged, body-on-frame SUV, the subtext was loud and clear—this platform is the literal blueprint for a production midsize pickup arriving by 2030.

To bridge the gap between the SUV reveal and the promised truck, we’ve created a rendering to visualize what that production pickup might actually look like. This design study takes the “Art of Steel” philosophy and applies it to a bed-equipped powerhouse.

Visualizing the Shift: From SUV Concept to Pickup Reality

The official Boulder Concept is a design study in raw, structural beauty. However, because Hyundai confirmed this fully-boxed ladder frame is destined for the pickup segment, our rendering explores how those “Art of Steel” lines translate when you swap the enclosed cargo area for an open bed.

1. The “Art of Steel” in a Pickup Form

Our rendering keeps the Liquid Titanium finish and the upright, rectilinear silhouette that defined the NYIAS debut. By maintaining the 37-inch mud-terrain tires and high-clearance fenders, the pickup version looks less like a “lifestyle” vehicle (like the Santa Cruz) and more like a heavy-duty competitor for the midsize throne.

2. The Practicality of the “Swiss Army” Tailgate

In the SUV concept, Hyundai showcased a double-hinged rear gate. Our rendering applies this logic to a pickup bed, envisioning a tailgate that can drop traditionally or swing out, making it easier to reach gear or load motorcycles and ATVs.

3. Safari Windows & Open-Air Ambience

One of the Boulder’s most unique features is the dual safari-style upper windows. In our pickup rendering, we’ve kept this “glass-heavy” cabin design. It ensures that even in a rugged truck, the driver maintains the 360-degree visibility required for technical off-roading.

Why This Platform Changes the Game

Hyundai isn’t just building a truck; they are building a backbone. This is the brand’s first-ever fully boxed truck platform developed specifically for North America.

“Body-on-frame vehicles are the backbone of American work and adventure.” — José Muñoz, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor Company.

Technical Foundations

The rendering reflects the serious hardware confirmed at the show:

  • Ladder Frame: A traditional, steel-heavy construction for towing and high-stress off-roading.
  • Digital Spotter: Software-driven guidance that acts as a co-pilot during rock crawling.
  • Tactile Interior: A cabin designed with physical knobs and buttons—no more fumbling with touchscreens while the truck is in motion.

The Verdict

While the vehicle seen in New York was an SUV, the Boulder Concept is a Trojan Horse for a pickup revolution. Our rendering serves as a “love letter” to the truck enthusiasts who have waited years for Hyundai to enter the frame.

If the production version stays this true to the rugged, “Art of Steel” aesthetic, the midsize segment is about to get a lot more interesting.
