The next-generation Kia Seltos (internal code: SP3) is officially set to be unveiled on December 10, according to exclusive information we have obtained. The all-new model will mark a major evolution for Kia’s popular compact SUV, bringing with it a hybrid powertrain for the first time and an in-house developed e-AWD system.

A Key Step in Kia’s Electrification Strategy

The upcoming Seltos Hybrid represents a crucial step in Kia’s broader strategy to electrify its entire lineup of SUVs and recreational vehicles (RVs) in the Korean market. This initiative aims to balance the slowing demand for fully electric vehicles (EVs) with the rapidly increasing global appetite for hybrid powertrains.

According to the latest internal schedule, mass production of the next-generation Seltos will begin in August 2026 at the Kia Autoland Gwangju factory, following its global debut in December 2025.

First-Ever Hybrid Powertrain in the Seltos

Since its original launch in 2019, the Kia Seltos has been offered with gasoline and diesel engines, though the diesel option was later phased out due to declining demand. The introduction of a hybrid variant marks a turning point for the model, combining fuel efficiency with improved performance and lower emissions.

The next-generation Seltos will be available in gasoline and hybrid versions, with the hybrid variant expected to serve as a core model for both domestic and international markets.

1.6 GDi or 1.6 Turbo GDi for the Kia Seltos Hybrid powertrain?

Could the Seltos Borrow Sportage’s 1.6 Turbo Hybrid?

While earlier reports suggested the Seltos Hybrid might share the 1.6-liter GDi hybrid system from the Kia Niro or Hyundai Kona Hybrid (producing around 141 hp), new information suggests Kia could instead equip the Seltos with the 1.6 Turbo Hybrid engine from the Kia Sportage.

If confirmed, this move would significantly boost the SUV’s power and efficiency, aligning the Seltos more closely with higher-segment models. However, this engine configuration remains unconfirmed at this stage. Kia may finalize its decision closer to production as part of its ongoing powertrain optimization strategy.

Development of a New e-AWD System

Another key innovation for the upcoming Seltos is Kia’s new electronic all-wheel-drive system (e-AWD), developed in-house to enhance hybrid performance and efficiency. This advanced drivetrain will provide superior traction and stability, particularly aimed at meeting European market preferences for all-wheel-drive SUVs.

The e-AWD setup is expected to deliver stronger torque distribution and smoother power delivery, making the hybrid Seltos not only more capable off-road but also more engaging to drive on various terrains.

Market Outlook and Strategic Impact

Since 2020, the Kia Seltos has consistently topped small SUV sales rankings in South Korea, thanks to its blend of affordability, practicality, and premium design. With the addition of hybrid technology, Kia aims to broaden its appeal to eco-conscious consumers while maintaining the model’s competitive price point — reportedly starting in the low 20 million won range.

However, industry observers note a potential overlap with the Kia Niro, which occupies a similar size segment and already features a hybrid system. Kia will need to carefully position the new Seltos Hybrid to avoid internal competition while capitalizing on its sportier, SUV-oriented image.

The Road Ahead

The next-generation Kia Seltos will not only showcase a refined design inspired by Kia’s latest SUV family but also introduce cutting-edge hybrid and drivetrain technologies. With its official unveiling confirmed for December 10, anticipation is building for what could be one of Kia’s most important launches of 2025.

If the Seltos indeed adopts the Sportage’s 1.6 Turbo Hybrid system, it will further strengthen its position in the compact SUV segment, delivering higher performance and efficiency than ever before.
