Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai Motor, is set to make a strategic shift by localizing production and research operations in China. This move aligns with Hyundai Motor’s aggressive expansion into the premium automotive sector within the world’s largest car market.

Localized Production and R&D

Genesis China CEO Zhu Jiang recently revealed that the brand is transitioning away from its current model of exclusively importing vehicles from Korea. Instead, Genesis will establish localized production facilities and invest in research and development (R&D) within China. This shift aims to enhance the brand’s competitiveness against local and international luxury automakers.

A Hyundai Motor Group spokesperson confirmed that Genesis is exploring ways to strengthen its local R&D efforts and develop models specifically tailored for Chinese consumers. Producing models in China is under review as part of this strategic initiative.

Genesis to Launch Market-Specific EVs

In addition to localized production, Genesis plans to introduce a “new energy vehicle” in China within the next three to five years. This term encompasses battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles but excludes conventional hybrids. Specific details of the upcoming model remain undisclosed.

Competitive Landscape in China

Hyundai Motor’s pivot to local production comes as major competitors, including Toyota, expand their manufacturing presence in China. Hyundai and its subsidiary Kia already produce certain models within the country, with Beijing Hyundai Motor—a joint venture with Beijing Automotive Group—manufacturing localized versions of global models such as the Sonata and Mufasa.

Toyota also recently launched the bZ3X, a competitively priced electric crossover designed for the Chinese market, reinforcing the intense competition Genesis will face. German luxury automakers and premium Japanese brands have long-established manufacturing bases in China, giving them a significant advantage in brand recognition and cost efficiency.

Challenges and Opportunities

Genesis faces stiff competition from both Chinese brands and established luxury players from Japan and Germany. Despite selling approximately 10,000 vehicles per month in Korea, Genesis only managed to sell around 1,500 units in China in 2023. One of the key challenges is China’s 15% tariff on auto imports, which impacts pricing competitiveness. Local production could help Genesis mitigate this disadvantage and better position itself against competitors.

According to Kwon Yong-joo, a professor at Kookmin University’s Department of Automotive & Transportation Design, Hyundai Motor Group has struggled in China, particularly after geopolitical tensions surrounding Korea’s deployment of the U.S. Thaad missile defense system in 2016. However, shifting to localized production signals Genesis’ intent to compete more directly with German luxury brands and premium Chinese EV manufacturers.

Strategic Implications for Hyundai and Kia

If Genesis succeeds in strengthening its foothold in China’s premium market, the positive brand perception could also benefit Hyundai Motor and Kia. Increased brand equity in the luxury segment may contribute to broader consumer trust and acceptance of Hyundai Motor Group’s vehicles across various price points.

Conclusion

Genesis’ decision to localize production and develop EVs tailored to the Chinese market reflects its commitment to gaining a stronger foothold in China’s luxury auto sector. By addressing competitive disadvantages and leveraging local R&D, Genesis aims to position itself as a formidable player in the premium EV space. As the global automotive industry continues its electrification shift, Genesis’ success in China could significantly influence Hyundai Motor Group’s overall market positioning and future strategies.
