Hyundai is preparing to unveil its next big step in the electric vehicle (EV) market — the Hyundai IONIQ 3. Set to debut as a nearly production-ready concept at the Munich Motor Show in September 2025, the new EV will slot between the Inster and the Kona Electric, despite in the spy phots looks smaller, Hyundai compared with the EV3 in an interview with TopGear.

Positioned Between the Inster and Kona EV

While Hyundai already offers the compact Kona Electric and the entry-level Inster, the new IONIQ 3 is designed to bridge the gap with a more sophisticated digital-forward experience. Although slightly smaller than the Kona EV, Hyundai says the Ioniq 3 will offer technology and features typically found in higher segments — without an inflated price tag.

Battery Options and Performance

The Hyundai IONIQ 3 will launch with two battery choices:

  • 58.3 kWh battery – targeting a WLTP range of around 260 miles
  • 81.4 kWh battery – expected to deliver up to 365 miles of range

Performance is equally competitive. The 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) sprint will be completed in under 8 seconds, while front-wheel drive ensures efficiency for everyday use. Unlike the IONIQ 5, 6, and 9, the IONIQ 3 uses a 400V electrical system — more cost-effective, though slightly slower to charge than the 800V setup in Hyundai’s larger EVs.

TopGear said it will have Pleos when launched in early 2026

Digital-First Experience with CarPlay Ultra and Pleos OS

Hyundai is pushing boundaries with the IONIQ 3’s connected features. The EV will support Apple CarPlay Ultra, but even without it, Hyundai’s next-generation infotainment system will allow deep customization. Owners can configure layouts, personalize themes, and even select new synthesized EV sound effects.

The IONIQ 3 introduces Hyundai’s new Pleos operating system, developed in collaboration with leading digital corporations. Pleos enables the car to function as a software-defined vehicle (SDV), meaning features and upgrades can be unlocked over time. Like smartphone apps, owners will be able to download new functionalities or reconfigure the car even after resale — giving used-car buyers flexibility that’s rare in today’s market.

European Production in Turkey

To remain competitive in Europe, Hyundai will build the IONIQ 3 in Turkey. This strategy avoids high shipping costs and tariffs, while reinforcing Hyundai’s local presence. In 2024, nearly 80% of Hyundai’s European sales came from models built in its Czech Republic and Turkish factories, including the Tucson, i30, i10, and i20. With the Ioniq 3 joining the lineup, Hyundai further solidifies its claim as a “local player” in the European EV market.

Hyundai’s EV Growth Strategy

According to Xavier Martinet, Hyundai’s European boss, brand recognition for Ioniq has skyrocketed. In surveys, Hyundai now ranks as the second-most recognized EV brand after Tesla. The success of the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and flagship IONIQ 9 has boosted Hyundai’s profile and average transaction prices in the UK by 50% compared with five years ago.

But Hyundai isn’t stopping at the premium end. With the Inster and the new IONIQ 3, the brand aims to capture a larger share of affordable EVs while retaining its strong position in higher segments.

Martinet stresses that EV growth is a race against competitors, not combustion engines:

“People don’t go back to ICE after they’ve had an EV,” he explains.

Conclusion: A Key Player in the Compact EV Market

The Hyundai IONIQ 3 represents the next phase in Hyundai’s EV expansion — a compact, digital-first, and affordable option built for Europe. With strong range, competitive pricing, advanced connectivity, and local production, it’s set to become one of Hyundai’s most important models in the transition to electrification.

Enthusiasts and buyers alike can expect the IONIQ 3 to go on sale in early 2026, shortly after its Munich debut in September 2025.
