The automotive industry is currently navigating a period of transition, often referred to by industry experts as a “chasm”—a temporary cooling of demand before electric vehicles (EVs) become the universal standard. At Kia’s 82nd Annual General Meeting, President Song Ho-sung addressed this head-on, unveiling a comprehensive strategy to maintain leadership through a massive product offensive.

By the end of this decade, Kia aims to have 13 distinct EV models in its global lineup, supported by a shift toward software-defined mobility and specialized commercial platforms.

A Comprehensive Fleet: From EV2 to the 2030 Vision

Kia’s plan to overcome the market slowdown involves a “full lineup of popularized models.” Rather than focusing solely on premium segments, the company is prioritizing accessibility to bring electric driving to the masses.

  • The Rollout Strategy: Following the debut of the EV3 in 2024, Kia is moving quickly with the EV4 and the new EV2, which is set to launch this year.
  • Strengthening the Ecosystem: To support 13 models by 2030, Kia is investing heavily in Plug & Charge 2.0and the Kia One App, alongside a significant expansion of ultra-fast charging stations to eliminate range and charging anxiety.
  • Supply Chain Optimization: President Song emphasized that product innovation must be paired with supply chain strengthening to ensure price competitiveness and steady delivery.

The PBV Revolution: Flexible Growth Beyond 2025

A major pillar of Kia’s future growth is the Purpose-Based Vehicle (PBV). These are modular vehicles designed for specific business and lifestyle needs, utilizing a flexible production system at the Mars EVO Plants.

  • PV5 (Current): The first specialized model focusing on efficiency and low renovation costs.
  • PV7 (2027): A larger iteration to be produced at the EVO Plant West.
  • PV9 (2029): The final stage of the current PBV roadmap.

These vehicles will serve as a canvas for specialized conversions, ranging from camping vehicles to open-bed trucks, integrated with AI and robotics to create a truly “people-centered” driving experience.

Software-Centric Innovation and Autonomous Driving

Kia is evolving from a traditional manufacturer into a technology-driven brand. By 2027, the company plans to introduce its next-generation Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV).

This roadmap includes:

  1. AI-Based UX: Creating a hardware-software integration that learns from the user.
  2. Autonomous Internalization: Working with partners like Motional and 42dot to secure core self-driving capabilities.
  3. Connectivity: Ensuring all 13 upcoming EV models are fully integrated into a digital ecosystem.

Governance and Shareholder Value

During the meeting, Kia also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and shareholder returns. Updates to the articles of incorporation, such as the introduction of electronic general meetings, and the re-appointment of key leadership—including Finance Head Kim Seung-jun—signal a focus on stable, responsible management.

The Bottom Line

Kia is meeting the “EV chasm” with a surge of innovation. With a goal of 13 models by 2030 and a new frontier in PBVs, the company is positioning itself not just to survive the transition, but to define it.
