Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) announced today that José Muñoz will take the helm as the company’s President and CEO starting January 1, 2025. Muñoz will succeed current President and CEO Jaehoon Chang, who has been promoted to the role of Vice Chair of Hyundai Motor Group. A Leader with Proven Expertise
Muñoz joined Hyundai Motor Company in 2019 as President and Global Chief Operating Officer, as well as CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor North America. In 2022, he was appointed to Hyundai’s Board of Directors and took on expanded responsibilities across Europe, India, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific. Under his leadership, Hyundai experienced significant achievements, including:
- Record-breaking sales and market share growth in North America.
- Establishing a profitability-focused sales structure.
- Driving operational improvements and dealership network expansion.
Muñoz also spearheaded Hyundai’s commitment to U.S. manufacturing with a $12.6 billion investment in Georgia, including the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America production facility and two battery joint ventures.

A Distinguished Career
Before joining Hyundai, Muñoz served as the Chief Performance Officer for Nissan Motor Corporation and the Chairman of Nissan China and North America. During his 15-year tenure at Nissan, he drove substantial profit growth and set sales records. His earlier career included management roles at Toyota Motor Europe, further solidifying his extensive automotive industry expertise.
Personal Background and Leadership Philosophy
A native of Spain and a U.S. citizen, Muñoz holds a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and an Executive MBA from IE Business School. He has completed advanced executive programs at the Cranfield School of Management and INSEAD Business School. Fluent in English, Spanish, and French, Muñoz’s global perspective and commitment to innovation align seamlessly with Hyundai’s ambitions.
