The Genesis GV80 may be in line for another refresh next year, coinciding with the launch of the GV80 Hybrid. Recent spy footage of camouflaged prototypes, spotted by our colleagues at Woopa TV, has sparked speculation about a possible second facelift. While Genesis has not confirmed any official plans yet, the heavy camouflage and timing suggest that the brand could be preparing updates that go beyond the introduction of a new hybrid powertrain.
Camouflage Hints at Exterior Revisions
Test vehicles spotted in Korea are wearing more camouflage than what would normally be used for simple powertrain development. This has led industry watchers to believe that some exterior design changes may be in the works.
The front and rear bumpers appear to be slightly reworked, and the grille shape could also be revised to differentiate this version from the first facelift. However, if Genesis follows its usual pattern, the overall body and proportions will likely remain largely unchanged. The brand typically opts for subtle styling tweaks rather than major redesigns during facelifts.
These updates, if they happen, would help keep the GV80 looking fresh as competition in the luxury SUV segment intensifies.
Interior Likely to Feature Modernized Tech
The most significant potential upgrade involves the interior technology. The current GV80 has been criticized for feeling somewhat cramped around the center console, and this speculative facelift seems like an opportunity for Genesis to address that.
The updated SUV is expected to adopt the Pleos OS infotainment system, Hyundai Motor Group’s latest operating platform already found in models like the Grandeur, Santa Fe, and GV90. Pleos OS offers faster performance and a more modern interface, replacing the older CCIC system currently used in the GV80.
Other anticipated updates include a new steering wheel design and a revised digital instrument cluster, which may be slightly smaller than the current version to improve visibility and ergonomics. None of this has been confirmed yet, but these changes would align with Genesis’s recent technology rollouts across its lineup.
2.5 Hybrid Powertrain Expected to Debut
What seems more certain is the introduction of a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain, marking the GV80’s first foray into electrified propulsion.
Unlike the Palisade Hybrid, which uses a front-wheel-drive platform and a 6-speed automatic transmission, the GV80 will likely maintain a rear-wheel-drive layout. To suit its premium positioning, a new 7- or 8-speed automatic transmission is expected.
Fuel economy could be a strong point, with official estimates around 13.5 km/l and real-world figures possibly reaching 15–16 km/l. The hybrid GV80 is also expected to offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, enabling users to power external devices directly from the car — a feature that’s becoming increasingly popular among electrified SUVs.
A Strategic Move if Confirmed
The GV80 remains one of Genesis’s most important models, both symbolically and commercially. Introducing a hybrid version is already a significant step forward. Adding a second facelift on top of that would suggest Genesis wants to ensure the GV80 remains competitive until a next-generation model is ready.
For now, though, this facelift remains unconfirmed. The camouflaged prototypes offer some strong clues, but until Genesis makes an official announcement, the updates should be treated as well-informed speculation rather than guaranteed changes.
