Following the successful debut of the IONIQ V, Beijing Hyundai has confirmed that its aggressive product offensive will continue with a highly anticipated SUV model scheduled for launch in the first half of 2027. This upcoming vehicle is expected to be the production realization of the IONIQ Earth Concept, a design study focused on sustainability and rugged, high-tech exploration. The new SUV represents a critical piece of Hyundai’s “In China, For China, To Global” roadmap, which aims to introduce 20 new models to the Chinese market over the next five years.
Strategic Innovation and Local Collaboration
The 2027 SUV will be a primary beneficiary of the 8 billion yuan investment recently committed by Hyundai Motor and BAIC Group. To ensure the vehicle meets the rapid innovation cycles of the Chinese ecosystem, Hyundai is deepening its “Open Innovation” partnerships:
- Battery Technology: Continued collaboration with CATL to provide high-density, reliable power.
- Advanced Autonomy: Further integration of Momenta’s ADAS technologies.

Expanding the Lineup
While the IONIQ V caters to the premium sedan and crossover segment, the 2027 SUV will anchor Hyundai’s presence in the midsize to large segments. Hyundai has also confirmed that its future rollout will not be limited to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), but will also include Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) to provide flexible options for various driving needs across China.
“China is where the future of mobility is being defined,” stated José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. By leveraging local innovation for the production version of the IONIQ Earth Concept, Hyundai aims to set new global standards for the SUVs of tomorrow.
