Both Hyundai and Kia America have extended their streak of monthly record-breaking sales to a seventh consecutive month in the United States. This milestone comes amid growing economic uncertainty fueled by President Donald Trump’s 25% auto tariff on imported vehicles and parts, which took effect in April and expanded in May.

Hyundai Posts Best-Ever April U.S. Sales

On May 1, Hyundai announced April sales of 81,503 vehicles, a 19% increase from the 68,603 units sold during the same month in 2024. This figure marks Hyundai’s highest April performance ever, continuing a trend of record-breaking results for seven straight months.

Significant contributors to Hyundai’s growth include:

  • Tucson: +41%
  • Elantra: +30%
  • Santa Fe: +28%
  • Sonata: +12%
  • Palisade: +15%

All five models set new April sales records. In addition, Hyundai’s hybrid vehicle sales surged 46%, while total eco-friendly vehicle sales (including hybrids and EVs) rose 25% year-over-year.

Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, noted, “Strong demand for the Tucson Hybrid (HEV) drove the growth in eco-friendly vehicle sales. April’s record sales highlight Hyundai’s leadership in innovation, value, and performance.”

Kia Achieves Record April with 74,805 Units Sold

Kia America followed suit with April sales of 74,805 units, up 14% from the same month last year, continuing its own seven-month streak of record-breaking monthly results.

Key performers in Kia’s SUV and MPV lineup included:

  • Carnival MPV: +79%
  • Telluride: +21%
  • Sportage: +18%

In addition, Kia’s eco-friendly vehicle sales rose 21%, with continued interest in hybrid and electric models. The company is ramping up its electrification strategy with full-scale local production of the EV6 and EV9 now underway at its Georgia manufacturing plant.

Eric Watson, VP of Sales & Operations at Kia America, stated, “Rather than resting on seven consecutive months of record sales, we’re continuing our efforts to improve our product lineup and customer satisfaction. Enhanced charging infrastructure and U.S.-based EV production are strengthening our competitive edge.”

Hyundai and Kia Sales: Tariffs Accelerate Consumer Purchases

The backdrop of these impressive sales figures of Hyundai and Kia is the implementation of 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and parts by former President Donald Trump. The vehicle tariff took effect on April 3, with the parts tariff starting May 3. Hyundai’s public commitment to hold prices steady until June 2 prompted many American consumers to expedite their vehicle purchases, contributing to the April sales spike.
