Hyundai Bold North American Expansion 36 New Vehicles by 2030 2

Hyundai Motor is doubling down on its most profitable market. CEO Jose Muñoz recently unveiled a massive strategic roadmap for North America, headlined by the launch of 36 new vehicles by 2030. This expansion is supported by a historic $26 billion investment aimed at localizing production, bypassing tariff pressures, and dominating the next era of automotive technology. From extended-range EVs to the brand’s first true midsize pickup, here is how Hyundai plans to reshape the American road.

A $26 Billion Commitment to U.S. Manufacturing

Hyundai’s shift from a Korea-based export model to a U.S.-centric production powerhouse is unprecedented. The $26 billion investment planned between 2025 and 2028 exceeds the company’s cumulative U.S. investment since it first entered the market in 1986.

The investment breakdown includes:

  • $12 Billion: Expanding annual U.S. production capacity to 1.2 million vehicles.
  • $7 Billion: Strengthening the supply chain, including a dedicated new steel mill in Louisiana.
  • $7 Billion: Advancing “Future Tech” like autonomous driving, robotics, and AI in partnership with U.S. firms.

At the heart of this growth is Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Georgia. Already producing the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 SUVs, the facility is adding hybrid production this year and developing Waymo-equipped autonomous prototypes.

600-Mile Ranges and the First Midsize Pickup

To reach the 36-vehicle milestone, Hyundai is diversifying its powertrain strategy to meet evolving consumer demands. Two major highlights stand out in the upcoming lineup:

  1. Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs): Starting in 2027, Hyundai will introduce EREVs capable of driving ranges exceeding 600 miles or 965 km. These vehicles use a small internal combustion engine to charge the battery on the go, eliminating range anxiety.
  2. Body-on-Frame Midsize Pickup: Before 2030, Hyundai will officially enter the lucrative truck segment with its first body-on-frame midsize pickup, moving beyond the unibody design of the Santa Cruz to compete directly with industry heavyweights.

Record-Breaking Momentum

Despite a 15% tariff on automobiles, Hyundai’s North American sales rose 8% year-over-year to 1.2 million units last year. This marked the fifth consecutive year of record retail sales.

Beyond the Car: AI and Robotics

Hyundai is no longer just a car manufacturer; it is transforming into a technology-driven mobility provider. Through partnerships with Nvidia, Google DeepMind, and Waymo, the company is integrating physical AI into its fleet.

Furthermore, Hyundai plans to revolutionize the factory floor. By 2028, the company aims to scale the production of Boston Dynamics’ Atlas humanoid robots to 30,000 units annually to assist in manufacturing processes.

Global Outlook: China, Europe, and India

While North America is the priority, the aggressive expansion continues globally:

  • China: 20 new models over five years.
  • Europe: 5 new models in the next 18 months, including the IONIQ 3.
  • India: 26 new models by 2030, including the first locally developed electric SUV and the launch of the Genesis brand.

With 36 new models on the horizon and a production capacity set to rival the biggest domestic players, Hyundai is positioned to lead the transition to a high-tech, electrified future in North America.
